## Formula

```
Area formulas vary by shape
```

**Variables:**

- **Rectangle** — A = length × width
- **Square** — A = side²
- **Triangle** — A = ½ × base × height
- **Circle** — A = π × radius²
- **Trapezoid** — A = ½ × (base₁ + base₂) × height
- **Ellipse** — A = π × a × b

Each geometric shape has its own formula for calculating area based on its dimensions.

## Worked Example

### Example: Rectangle 10m × 5m

Area = length × width = 10 × 5 = 50 m²

## How to Use the Area Calculator

1. **Select Shape** — Choose the geometric shape you want to calculate.
2. **Enter Dimensions** — Input the required measurements (length, width, radius, etc.).
3. **Choose Unit** — Select the unit of measurement (meters, feet, etc.).
4. **View Results** — See the calculated area, perimeter, and step-by-step solution.

## Pro Tips

- Always use the same unit for all dimensions
- For irregular shapes, try breaking them into simpler shapes
- Circle area uses radius, not diameter (radius = diameter ÷ 2)
- Triangle area can also be calculated using Heron's formula if you know all sides
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 43,560 ft²
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I calculate the area of a rectangle?

Multiply length by width: Area = length × width. For example, a rectangle 10m × 5m has an area of 50 m².

### How do I calculate the area of a circle?

Use the formula A = π × r², where r is the radius. If you know the diameter, divide by 2 to get the radius first.

### How do I calculate the area of a triangle?

Use A = ½ × base × height. If you know all three sides, use Heron's formula: A = √(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)) where s = (a+b+c)/2.

### How do I calculate room area for flooring?

Measure length and width in meters or feet, then multiply them. For L-shaped rooms, divide into rectangles and add the areas.

### How do I calculate land area?

For rectangular land, multiply length × width. Common units: 1 acre = 4,046.86 m², 1 hectare = 10,000 m².

### How do I find the area of irregular shapes?

Break the shape into regular shapes (rectangles, triangles), calculate each area separately, then add them together.

### What's the difference between area and perimeter?

Area measures the space inside a shape (in square units). Perimeter measures the distance around the outside edge (in linear units).

### How do I calculate the area of a trapezoid?

Use A = ½ × (base₁ + base₂) × height. Add the two parallel sides, multiply by height, then divide by 2.

### How do I calculate the area of a trapezium?

Use A = ½ × (base₁ + base₂) × height, where base₁ and base₂ are the two parallel sides. For parallel sides of 8 m and 12 m with a height of 5 m: ½ × (8 + 12) × 5 = 50 m². 'Trapezium' (UK, India, Australia) and 'trapezoid' (US) refer to the same four-sided shape with one pair of parallel sides.

### How do I calculate the area of a parallelogram?

Multiply the base by the perpendicular height: A = base × height. Use the vertical height between the parallel sides, not the slanted side length. A base of 10 cm and a height of 6 cm gives 60 cm².

### What is square footage and how do I calculate it?

Square footage is area expressed in square feet: measure length and width in feet and multiply. A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 square feet. For irregular rooms, split into rectangles, find each area, and add them. Set the unit to feet to get results directly in sq ft.

### How do I measure the area of a plot of land for a survey?

Sketch the boundary, divide the plot into triangles and rectangles, measure each, calculate the individual areas, and add them — the classic surveyor's method. Convert to land units with 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² and 1 hectare = 10,000 m². The calculator outputs acres and hectares automatically.

### How do I convert between square meters, square feet, and acres?

Area scales with the square of the linear unit: 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft, 1 acre = 4,046.86 m², and 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres. The calculator shows your result in several area units at once, so you don't have to convert by hand.

### How do I find the area of a regular polygon?

For a regular polygon with n sides of length s, area = (n × s²) / (4 × tan(180°/n)). A regular hexagon with 5 cm sides has area (6 × 25) / (4 × tan(30°)) ≈ 64.95 cm². Select 'Regular Polygon' and enter the number of sides and the side length.

### What's the difference between area and surface area?

Area measures the flat space inside a 2D shape (square units). Surface area measures the total area of all faces of a 3D object — a cube, sphere, or cylinder. For 3D objects use a volume/surface-area calculator; this tool focuses on 2D shapes and their perimeters.

### Step-by-Step Solutions

**Learn how to calculate area** with detailed explanations.

Each calculation shows the formula and step-by-step solution.

### Trapezium and Trapezoid Area Calculator

A **trapezium** (called a **trapezoid** in American English) has one pair of parallel sides. Its area is **A = ½ × (base₁ + base₂) × height** — add the two parallel sides, multiply by the perpendicular height, and halve.

For example, parallel sides of 8 m and 12 m with a height of 5 m give ½ × (8 + 12) × 5 = 50 m².

The calculator above takes both parallel bases and the height directly.

### Parallelogram and Rhombus Area

A **parallelogram's area** is base × perpendicular height (not the slanted side): **A = b × h**.

A **rhombus** can use the same base × height, or the diagonal method **A = ½ × d₁ × d₂** when both diagonals are known.

A 10 cm base with 6 cm height gives 60 cm²; diagonals of 8 cm and 6 cm give ½ × 8 × 6 = 24 cm².

### Square Footage Calculator for Rooms and Floors

**Square footage** is area measured in square feet — length in feet times width in feet. A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft.

For flooring, carpet, tile, or paint estimates, measure each rectangular section in feet, multiply, and add the parts for L-shaped rooms.

Switch the unit selector to feet to read results directly in square feet.

### How to Measure Land Area for a Survey

For a **rectangular plot**, multiply length × width.

For an **irregular plot**, split it into triangles and rectangles from a sketch of the boundary, calculate each piece, and sum them — the method land surveyors use.

Common land units:

- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 43,560 sq ft
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres

Enter your measured dimensions and the calculator converts the area into acres and hectares automatically.

### Area Unit Conversions: Square Meters, Square Feet, Acres and Hectares

Area converts between units by the **square of the linear factor**:

- 1 m² = 10.764 sq ft
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m²
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m²
- 1 km² = 100 hectares

The calculator shows your result across metric and imperial area units at once, so a plot entered in metres can be read instantly in square feet or acres.

### Area of Irregular and Composite Shapes

**Real-world spaces** — gardens, floor plans, plots — are rarely one clean shape.

Break the outline into rectangles, triangles, and circle parts, compute each area separately, then add them (and subtract cut-outs like a pillar or pond).

This **composite method** turns any irregular shape into a sum of shapes the calculator already handles.
